Let’s Build Homes, Vermont’s leading pro-housing coalition, has launched a powerful new television ad on WCAX drawing attention to the state’s severe housing shortage and offering a vision for the future. The ad highlights a range of Vermonters, including a young family, a Northeast Kingdom teacher, an Upper Valley home builder and a health care leader and emphasizes the need to eliminate outdated regulations that prevent the development of homes for people of all income levels.
“At a time when young families, nurses, teachers, and others struggle to find housing that meets their needs and budgets, Vermont must take action,” said Miro Weinberger, Executive Chair of Let’s Build Homes. “This ad highlights both the problem and the solution: we can build a future where Vermonters can stay in their communities, businesses can grow, and new families are welcomed into our state—but only if we continue to reform our outdated housing policies.”
Vermont is facing an unprecedented housing shortage, with high costs and limited availability driving families out of the state and making it difficult for employers to attract workers. Decades of restrictive land-use policies and permitting challenges have slowed home construction to a crawl, leaving many without viable housing options.
“In the 1980s, we built three times as many homes per year as we do now,” said Maura Collins, Let’s Build Homes Board Member. “Research shows we need to double our current housing production to meet demand. Without action, Vermont risks becoming a place where only the wealthiest can afford to live.”
The new ad envisions a Vermont where housing abundance allows communities to thrive, workers to stay and grow their families, and businesses to expand. By advocating for reforms such as streamlining permitting, investing in housing infrastructure, and modernizing regulations, Let’s Build Homes is working to turn this vision into reality. The housing infrastructure bill, S.127, supported by Let’s Build Homes recently passed the Vermont Senate. Let’s Build Homes will be testifying in support of the legislation in the House this week.
The TV ad serves as a rallying cry, encouraging Vermonters who believe in a better, more affordable future to join the Let’s Build Homes coalition. Already, the coalition has attracted support from over 200 organizations and hundreds of individuals across the political spectrum, all united in the mission to create more homes for all Vermonters.
“We have the opportunity to fix the housing shortage, but it will take all of us—community leaders, business owners, policymakers, and residents—to push for change,” said Neale Lunderville, Let’s Build Homes Board Member.
The ad was made possible through partnerships with both WCAX and Northfield Savings Bank, who are both committed to creating housing abundance in Vermont. To watch the ad and learn more about how you can support housing solutions in Vermont, visit letsbuildhomes.org.
